High-resolution observations of the radio structure of the BL Lac-type object 3C 66A at low frequencies are reported. Observations were made using radio-linked interferometers at five frequencies between 151 and 1666 MHz, with fringe amplitudes calibrated on a flux reference scale by reference to the compact quasars 3C 48, 3C 286 and 3C 287. A flat-spectrum nuclear core of diameter less than 0.1 arcsec is observed, with flux decreasing over a 4-yr interval. The core is embedded in a region of diffuse halo emission of size about 35 arcsec which is responsible for the overall steep spectrum of 3C 66A. The diffuse nature of the extended halo emission from the source, which is comparable in luminosity to the most luminous radio galaxies and low-redshift quasars, is unusual for a high-luminosity radio source.
