Galaxies-Clusters Of Galaxies-Radial Velocities
Scientific paper
Applying the principle of maximum likelihood to the radial velocity data of 572 galaxies in the Virgo Cluster region, we found 434 to be members of the cluster. The mean heliocentric velocity is 1247 +/-37 km/s, and the dispersion is 752 +/-27 km/s. Analysis shows that although Virgo Cluster has subcluster structures, we can still use the normal distribution as a reasonable first approxiaation to the distribution for the cluster members. The galaxies of different types seem to have different spatial distributions, the late type galaxies may still be in the stage of infall.
