The radar data development program (RDDP) was initiated in 1986 by the Canadian government with the goal to prepare potential users of radar remote sensing data for the European ERS-1 and the Canadian RADARSAT satellite missions. This paper provides a general outline of the RDDP. Since its inception in 1986, the Canadian Radar Data Development Program has resulted in a number of tangible achievements in Atlantic Canada. Institutional linkages have been established by the Canada Centre for Remote Sensing (CCRS) with government agencies and departments, private sector firms, and educational and research institutions in the region in order to carry out RDDP related research and development work. Formal agreements have been reached through memoranda of understanding with the government of Nova Scotia and the government of Newfoundland and Labrador (and in the near future with the government of New Brunswick) to closely involve provincial government departments into the RDDP and the technology transfer process. A series of radar data interpretation training seminars have been held in the region with more than 110 participants. Over a time period of three years (1987-1990), some 20 missions with a total of approx. 25,000 line km and 200 hrs of aircraft time have been flown by CCRS in Atlantic Canada and over adjacent waters in response to C/X synthetic aperture radar data acquisition requests. A summary of completed and ongoing projects and investigations in such diverse application areas as sea ice monitoring, oceanography, hydrology, geology, land use monitoring, and forestry is presented.
