Numerical simulations of gravitational collapse of a star to form a black hole show emission of gravitational radiation with a characteristic spectrum. This radiation corresponds to an excitation of "quasi-normal" of "resonant" modes of the resulting black hole. To achieve a better mathematical understanding of these modes a simple model is examined which retains the essential features of the black-hole case.
