Longitudinal-type perturbations in an isotropic universe filled with a scalar field are considered. The action for the perturbations is expressed through a gauge-invariant variable completely characterizing the perturbations. A consistent theory for these perturbations is developed and the inhomogeneity spectrum in inflationary models for the evolution of the universe is calculated.
