Recent observations of cool carbon stars are examined and the applicability of a dust shell model previously developed is discussed. The model is finally applied to the photometry of a sample of 15 carbon Miras. The deduced radii variations are shown to agree with radial velocity curves, which yields an independent test of the adopted model and distance scale. It is shown that the radius and luminosity variations of the best-documented carbon Mira (U Cyg) are due to relaxed pulsations.
