A data base of over 100 extinction curves derived from IUE spectra was compiled. Statistical analysis of the sample confirms good correlation of visual extinction with 2200 A in the diffuse interstellar medium, and only partial correlation with the far UV component. At least three independent components are also indicated by variance analysis. The far UV rise in extinction is shown to be due to several distinct grain populations. The sample provides observational evidence of various processes responsible for variations in UV extinction, possibly including effects of grain orientation and alignment.
