The great successes of astrophysics in recent decades have exhibited two clear trends: (1) Major discoveries have swiftly followed the introduction into astronomy of novel, powerful observational instrumentation. (2) The growth in our understanding of cosmic processes has crucially depended on full scrutiny, in all accessible energy regimes. When we look to the future, these trends unwaveringly point to the need for a family of long-lived observatories in space coupled to massive data handling facilities on the ground.
