Examination of rain-water has revealed the presence of chlorine-39 formed by the interaction of cosmic radiation with argon in the lower atmosphere. The maximum amount of activity found agrees with what is expected from known reactions of cosmic radiation. Most of the production of chlorine-39 is due to the reaction A 40 + - = Cl 39 + n + . In several cases little activity was found. This appears to result from meteorological phenomena. Chlorine-39 is potentially useful in meteorology with specific application to the study of rain.
