The development of expansionary cosmological models is examined in a general historical review. Consideration is given to ancient philosophical speculation on the origin of the universe, the fundamental roles of Einstein's theory of general relativity and Friedmann's cosmological solutions, the extrapolation of current observational data backward to the early universe (about 20 Gyr ago), the fundamental equations of Friedmann-Lemaitre models, and the problems posed by the observed isotropy of the cosmic microwave background. The implications of GUTs and particle-physics experiments for big bang models are explored in detail; the inflationary scenario (exponential expansion in the very early universe) is described; and the difficulty of validating such scenarios by provable physical principles or observations is pointed out. Diagrams, graphs, and tables summarizing the basic equations and observational data are provided.
