Large-Scale Structure Of The Universe: Distance Scale, Methods: Statistical
Scientific paper
We evaluate the theoretical probability distribution of the Hubble constant, including experimental errors and cosmic variance, and taking into account the non-Gaussian nature of the density distribution. We obtain, for instance, that an experimental value as h=0.69+/-.08 (Tinvar et al. 1995) is incompatible with an age of the Universe larger than 14 Gyr at the 99.5% level of confidence if {OMEGA}=1, if we can assume the experimental error to be Gaussian distributed. Only a cosmological constant accounting for more than 35% of the total energy density would put our Universe in agreement with such a measure of h. Similar results are derived assuming the measure h=0.80+/-.17 (Freedman et al. 1995).
