The gas to dust ratio distribution in M 16 is determined. The results are in agreement with the observations made by O'Dellet al. (1966). The gas to dust ratio reaches (as in M 8 and in Orion) a constant value throughout the nebula with the exception of the inner part. This value is consistent with the value given for the general interstellar medium. In all the available cases (even in Orion) the amount of dust seems to increase in the inner part of the nebula (say, 4' from the centre).
