Thermal Radiation: Polarization
Scientific paper
General properties of the coherence matrix and Stokes parameters are analysed for the thermal radiation from a uniform medium bounded, on average, by a plane rough surface with low and slightly sloping inhomogeneities. The degree of polarization is considered as a function of the angle of line of sight for different wavelengths, values of the dielectric constant of the radiating medium and parameters of the angular roughness spectrum. For a nearly vertical angle of line of sight the roughness anisotropy can greatly increase the degree of polarization as compared with a plane boundary and isotropic roughness.
