This paper presents the distribution of polarized radio emission from the head-tail radio source B2 1615+35. The observations were made with the Westerbork Synthesis Radio Telescope (WSRT) at the frequencies of 0.6, 1.4, and 5.0 GHz. By comparing maps at different frequencies, we derive the distribution of rotation measure, depolarization and the direction of the ordered magnetic field.
On the assumption that the depolarization is due to differential Faraday rotation inside the source, we deduce a value of ≍2 10-3 cm-3 for the internal density of thermal plasma. This is about ten times larger than the values estimated for the external medium.
We discuss the problem of acceleration of the relativistic particles in the tail, as implied by the characteristics of the radio spectrum, in terms of hydromagnetic turbulence present in the radio plasmas. We determine a range of turbulence parameters for which we can obtain the necessary acceleration. This turbulence is likely to heat the internal plasma to a temperature of ˜105 K through non-linear processes.
