The planet Venus is discussed in the light of radar techniques and deep space probe observations. Data on the planet's orbital motion are presented, as are tables indicating the principal planetary parameters for earth and Venus, and spacecraft missions to Venus. The surface of Venus is examined in detail, considering such methods as pulse radar and range-Doppler mapping, radio observations, the Venera gamma-densimeter and gamma-ray-spectrometer experiments, and surface photographs. Radar data shows the existence of a durable and varied topography, with areas of seemingly differing geological age. The atmosphere of Venus, including atmospheric physical characteristics, infra-red thermal emissions, and the ultraviolet clouds, is examined through the use of spectroscopic analyses, spacecraft gas analyzers, and theMariner 10 occultation experiment. The ionosphere and future explorations of Venus are considered.
