The characteristics of the surface of Jupiter in the 8-month period surrounding the opposition of January 24, 1979 are discussed based on observations recorded in the forms of drawings, photographs and central meridian passages. Observations show a very active South South Temperate Current with a large and dark South South Temperate Belt with several light spots on its northern edge. The three White Oval spots were in regression, while the Red Spot was changeable in appearance, becoming faint towards the end of the period in association with a resumption of activity in the southern component of the South Equatorial Belt. The Southern Equatorial Zone remained unchanged since the last opposition, while the Equatorial Band was in regression and the Northern Equatorial Zone exhibited numerous white spots as the number of dark patches decreased. The northern component of the North Equatorial Belt becomes stronger, while the North Temperate Band continued to weaken. The visibility of the North North Temperate Belt and white spots in the North North Temperate Zone are indicative of some activity in the North North Temperate current.
