The physical nature of ultraviolet excess objects in the A 1 field is investigated and the surface density of quasars at the magnitude limit of the A 1 survey is determined. The component populations of the UV excess objects selected by the two-color method on Schmidt telescope plates are: 59 percent F and G stars, 12 percent hot stars, 2 percent peculiar stars, 2 percent double stars, 3 percent white dwarfs, 9 percent quasars and 13 percent compact galaxies. These proportions seem to be a function of magnitude, the fainter objects all being compact galaxies. It is shown that the choice of the (U-B) to be less than -0.4 for the color index limit in the two-color samples for selecting quasars optically is correct. The surface density of quasars determined from this sample is in the range 0.18 to 0.27 per square degree at B equals 17.5, in good agreement with previous findings.
