The period distribution of cataclysmic variables below the orbital period gap shows an intriguing feature: the SU UMa stars and the AM Her stars separately show a tendency to cluster, but the period ranges favored by one class are avoided by the other. The authors show that this is a statistically significant effect and consider possible explanations without successfully identifying a physical cause.
