Deep B, J, and R Schmidt photographs show that the peculiar 13th magnitude object ESO 313-N(asterisk)10 (right ascension 8h40m27s; declination -40.3314 deg; 1950.0) consists of at least nine condensations, embedded in a nebulosity (diameter 35 arcsec). The condensations are red and have strong H alpha emission. The nebulosity is blue and has a composite, B0-B2 absorption spectrum. ESO 313-N(asterisk)10 is probably associated with a large cloud complex at a distance of approximately 1 kpc. It is provisionally interpreted as intermediate between a typical Herbig-Haro object with multiple condensations and a group of Herbig Be-stars with nebulosity and may represent the late, pre-main sequence phase of a compact group of early-type stars. A possible, alternative interpretation is a highly reddened Trapezium-like group of hot stars. High-dispersion, IR and radio observations are desirable.
