Undisputed model-independent information on Epsilon Aurigae is used to evaluate different models for that peculiar binary system. It is shown that the invisible companion is not a simple spherical star and that the visible star is either in the process of contracting toward the main sequence or is evolving away from it. A model is proposed in which a dust and gas disk that may become transparent near its edges passes periodically in front of the visible star. It is concluded that the system is at a distance of 300 to 550 pc, the visible star is probably a pre-main-sequence object of approximately 10 solar masses, and the disk may be a preplanetary nebula.
