We describe a radio survey made using the Parkes 64 m radiotelescope at a frequency of 4850 MHz. This survey took place during 1990 and used a multi-beam receiver on loan from the NRAO. This is the same receiver used by Condon et al. (1989) for the northern hemisphere surveys. The PMN Survey covers the sky from -87.5(o) to +10(o) declination and thus both compliments and overlaps the Condon et al. surveys. At the present time, we have fully reduced the data from the Southern Survey (-87.5(o) < delta < -37(o) ) and the Tropical Survey (-29(o) < delta < -9.5(o) ). Together, these two portions of the PMN Survey contain 36,676 sources to a flux limit which is typically around 35 mJy but which varies as a function of declination. They increase the number of known sources in the regions specified by approximately a factor of 9. We describe the overall PMN Survey, the data reduction techniques adopted, and present some preliminary results.
