Scientific paper

The survey reported completes 408 MHz surveys conducted by Haslam et al. (1970, 1974). The linear polarization distribution was measured and an accurate average temperature map in left-hand circular polarization was obtained. Attention is given to the correlating receiver system used, the on-line data logging system, the development of a library of computer programs, and a trial map which shows a bright region of the galactic plane where temperatures reach 375 K.
