We present results from the Palomar Observatory Wide-field Infrared (POWIR) survey concerning the evolution of red and massive galaxies out to z ˜ 1 utilizing deep (KVega = 20.5-21) K-band imaging and spectroscopy. We utilize 0.5 square degree of this imaging in the Extended Groth Strip, with 4,000 DEEP2 radial velocities out to z ˜ 1.4, selected to have R < 24. We discuss the properties of galaxies selected in this sample by their red optical-infrared color, high luminosities, and large stellar masses. We find that the stellar masses of the most massive galaxies are largely in place by z 1, and that there is a relatively good correspondence between the reddest galaxies, as selected through the ERO criteria, (R-K) > 5.3 or (I-K) > 4, and the most massive galaxies at z > 0.9. We furthermore present the redshifts distributions for these red galaxies, and use their SEDs and spectral features to determine other physical properties.
