Sampling was done at thirty-four sites in the main zone of the western Bushveld Complex, South Africa. Alternating field (AF) and thermal demagnetization of specimens indicated a multicomponent NRM in the majority of specimens. A primary magnetization direction (D = 357.8° I = 70.9° α95 = 2.8° k = 80) was recovered from thirty-two sampling sites. Fold tests indicate that the igneous layering was emplaced in a horizontal position and that the NRM predates tilling of the layered sequence. Two sampling sites situated in the lower part of the main zone yielded magnetization directions approximately antipodal to the above mentioned magnetization direction. The palaeomagnetic pole position (9.2°N 27.3°E), calculated for the main zone of the western Bushveld Complex, indicates that this part of the main zone had acquired its magnetization later than the main zone in the eastern Bushveld Complex and later than the underlying critical zone.
