The formation of ozone in the atmosphere and its present state of depletion are reviewed. The methods used to study the ozone content of the atmosphere over Antarctica are described, and the results obtained by the National Ozone Expedition and the Chemistry of Ozone in the Polar Stratosphere study are reviewed. The possible threat to the earth's environment posed by the ozone depletion is briefly discussed.
