The origin of transient decreases in galactic cosmic ray intensity caused by solar activity is examined. A Chree analysis is conducted on cosmic ray intensity decreases due to solar flares (Forbush decreases), determined by type IV radio emission well expanded in frequency. It is found that the cosmic ray decrease does not take place with the passage of the active region across the central solar meridian, as concluded by Duggal and Pomerantz (1977), but two to three days after the type IV solar flares. An analysis of superposed epochs is performed to determine the effect of fast streams of solar wind emanating from coronal holes on the galactic cosmic ray intensity; increases in solar wind velocity are shown to be accompanied by decreases in cosmic ray intensity of lesser amplitude than the Forbush decreases. Other low amplitude cosmic ray decreases are considered to be due to type IV flares beyond the solar east limb.
