Various models for the origin of the solar system are critically evaluated. Four groups of models are considered: formation of the sun and planets at the same time from the same cloud of interstellar material, formation of the planets from a cloud of interstellar material captured by a previously formed sun, disintegration of a binary companion of the sun, and a close encounter between the sun and another star. Each group is tested against five criteria: the isotopic abundance of elements, the existence of isotopic anomalies, mechanisms of interstellar cloud contraction, and the chemical composition of different solar-system objects. These criteria are shown to support the group of models that implies formation of the sun and planets from the same interstellar cloud. A 'best-fit' model is discussed which involves a second-generation contracting protosolar nebula and a disk of dust and ice from which planetary nuclei condensed.
