Because of synchrotron self-absorption of infrared radiation in the quasar 3C 273, electrons of energy E not greater than 27 mc-squared will suffer no losses, and will take on a quasi-equilibrium distribution of the universal form N(E) = 4 x 10 to the -5th E to the -3rd. By scattering infrared radiation these electrons can furnish the optical and ultraviolet radiation observed. Further scattering will produce X rays and gamma rays with energies as high as hundreds of MeV.
