We test the possibility that the excess emission of nitrogen observed in the Starburst Nucleus Galaxies (SBNGs) is produced by an overabundance of this element. To verify our hypothesis, we used the photoionization code CLOUDY increasing artificially the abundance of N in a model reproducing the line ratios observed in normal HII regions. We verify that an overabundance by at most a factor 2 is sufficient to explain the excess of emission of the nitrogen line in the SBNGs. The overabundance of N predicted by our model is also consistent with the best estimates possible for the N/O ratio in these galaxies. In The SBNGs, the dependence of the N/O ratio on metalicity indicates a primary mode of production for N, which can be explained by assuming that N is a product of intermediate mass stars. For the SBNGs, this implies major burst of star formation Z ~ 0.2-0.3 Gyrs in the past.
