An investigation is conducted concerning the various noncosmological mechanisms which could possibly produce deuterium in significant amounts. A summary is presented of the general nuclear constraints which must be satisfied by viable models for deuterium production. An analysis shows that very severe restrictions can be placed on the mechanisms for producing deuterium. On the basis of these restrictions it is concluded that the deuterium is probably of pregalactic origin. It is pointed out that big-bang nucleosynthesis provides an elegant theory for the synthesis of deuterium and helium.
