The orbital structure of the outer Kuiper Belt, formerly known as the Scattered Disk and Extended Scattered Disk, hold very important clues on the formation of the giant planets and the outer Solar System. Unfortunately, our knowledge of it is plagued with strong unknown biases due to a lack of coordinated follow-up efforts after discovery. The Canada-France Ecliptic Plane Survey (CFEPS) is the first large scale survey of Kuiper Belt objects with an integrated follow-up strategy that led to the characterized discovery of order 400 KBOs with follow-up of about 80% of them.
This, for the first time, gives us a realistic view of the orbital structure of the outer Kuiper Belt, unveiling that a large fraction of this population is indeed made of resonant objects. Like the Plutinos, these populations suffer from strong detections biases which can be removed when applying the CFEPS survey simulator on the characterized fields of discovery.
Using the discovery of years 2003 and 2004, we provide a population estimate of the outer Kuiper Belt and the resonant populations, and also address the problem of missing detections at large distances.
