A numerical theory for predicting the motion of P/Halley is described. An equatorial coordinate system with origin at the barycenter of the solar system is utilized to represent the motion of P/Halley; the comet's barycentric and heliocentric positions are examined. The initial conditions of equations and the Marsden model parameters of the disturbing forces are estimated from 1759, 1835, 1910, and 1986 observations of the comet. The least-squares technique is applied to the astronomical data in order to achieve consistency among the observations. The system of equations are integrated by means of a recurrent power series to yield the comet's position. The coordinates and velocities of comet Halley at the 1986 perihelion passage are predicted with the theory. The theory is useful for calculating the orbit of the comet in order to select the proper trajectory for spacecraft monitoring the apparition.
