Ultra-luminous IRAS galaxies (ULIRGs) are strong interacting or merging galaxies. About ten percent of ULIRGs are QSOs or Seyfert 1 galaxies. High-resolution HST images suggest that they are likely to be in a post merger stage. We investigate the optical spectroscopic properties for a complete sample of 28 QSOs / Seyfert 1s selected mainly from the IRAS galaxy redshift survey QDOT and 1.2Jy catalogues. The optical spectra were obtained with the Beijing Astronomical Observatory 2.16m optical telescope between Oct. 1998 and the end of 1999. 1. Most of our sample galaxies are strong or extremely strong FeII emitters --- with FeII/Hβ >2, and the ratio FeII/Hβ anticorrelated with EW(OIII) and FWHM(Hβ). 2. Continuum fitting of the sample galaxies shows a few objects well fitted by a power-law spectrum, while most are fitted by a blackbody, or composite power-law / blackbody spectrum. Like optically selected Seyfert 1 galaxies, Seyfert 1 galaxies fitted by a power-law, have small E(B-V). For Seyfert 1 galaxies with a blackbody fit E(B-V) increases with increasing temperature --- evidence in support of evolution from starburst to optical QSO/Seyfert 1. 3. A possible mechanism for strong FeII emission in the evolution from merger to AGN is discussed.
