A 15th magnitude shell star with a strong double-peaked H-alpha emission line has been discovered within 20 arcsec of the best X-ray position for GX 304-1. It is suggested that this is the optical counterpart of the X-ray source. The apparent spectral type of the star is B6-9, but the spectral reddening is consistent with its being an early B dwarf at a distance of about 2 + or - 1 kpc. The mean X-ray luminosity is thus of the order of 10 to the 35th power erg/s. The nature of Be star/X-ray pulsating systems is briefly discussed.
