The effect of extended circumstellar envelopes on the photometric properties and dynamics of type II supernovae is studied. If the constant in the density distribution law, C(rho), is less than about 10 to the 14th g/cm (the typical stellar wind of late giants and supergiants), the circumstellar envelope has practically no effect on the light curves. When the wind is more intense and C(rho) is about 10 to the 15th to 10 to the 17th g/cm, the supernova luminosity increases by 1-2 mag when the light curve reaches a plateau; the duration of the plateau remains unchanged. The interaction between matter ejected by the supernova and the stellar wind forms a spatially thin, optically thick dense spherical layer in which true absorption dominates Thomson scattering.
