The recently launched Odin satellite carries two instruments aboard: an optical spectrograph (OSIRIS) and a Sub-Millimeter Radiometer (SMR) for measuring profiles of minor constituents in the middle atmosphere by using limb sounding. For a period of some months, the main task will be to validate profiles of molecules estimated from the first observations. A validation group has been constituted a few years ago and has several objectives which are described. More recently priorities among the species were decided, i.e. ozone, ClO, H2O, NO2, N2O, aerosols in first priority, while BrO, OClO, HNO3, NO, CO were placed at a second priority level. The scientific rationale behind the ranking concerns the need to validate all the species that help to study the lower stratospheric ozone question. Therefore it is found desirable to have a dynamics tracer in the first group, such as N2O. Different sub-groups were constituted, each sub-group being in charge of a given species and of various actions such as algorithm developments, available data obtained by ground-based, balloon-, rocket-, aircraft- and space-borne experiments as well as data assimilation, model computations and, the definition of the procedure of validation taking into account instrumental parameters of the reference profile used for comparison. This paper present the proposed validation programme based on measurement activities going on in various laboratories.
