This paper discusses the significance of solar bidimensional (2D) spectral observations. It reviews the progress in observational techniques and instruments of 2D spectroscopy, especially the recent progress in CCD imaging spectrographs. Some new results of solar 2D spectral observations and researches are presented. The prospects of future observational techniques and research are also discussed.
