This paper considers the extent to which the density-wave models of spiral structure proposed by Lin et al. (1969) and by Marochnik et al. (1972) are supported by observational evidence on the parameters of the Galaxy and by the consistency of their consequences with observational data on spiral structure. Multicomponent galaxy models are described, and the structure and parameters of Galactic subsystems are examined. The interpretation of the observed H I distribution in spiral galaxies is discussed, along with stellar kinematics and numerical experiments in density-wave theory. The spiral-structure models are then compared with observational data for external galaxies. It is concluded that the theory of Marochnik et al. closely fits the various observational facts relating to diverse aspects of the structure of both the Galaxy and external galaxies and can explain many of their structural features.
