We describe a study to determine the observational and algorithmic selection effects on the discovery of small, young asteroid clusters in the main belt. We create orbit elements for synthetic small asteroid families and inject them into the distribution of real asteroid belt orbit elements after accounting for the discovery probability of each individual family member based on its orbital elements and absolute magnitude. We then search for the cluster using our implementation of the Hierarchical Clustering Method. Repeating this process for synthetic families distributed throughout the main belt and with different dynamical ages and number of objects for the families allows us to determine the detection probability for the families as a function of their orbital elements, number of members and age. These results allow us to calculate the actual number of young asteroid clusters from the observed number and confront theoretical expectations for the production rate of these families through catastrophic distribution of small asteroids.
