The nucleon spectrum at production is determined from direct measurements as well as indirect evidence, with a view toward its usefulness in the analysis of cosmic ray muon data from ground-based muon telescopes. The applicability of the Gross transformation is re-examined to obtain some information on the angular distribution of the nucleons. A fundamental study of a three-dimensional cascade is carried out for this purpose, since a linear cascade does not reflect the nucleon transport from one direction to another. A linear cascade approximation is shown to be useful in the derivation of muon monitor coupling functions. The expected coupling function for an inclined meson telescope with a zenith angle of 35 degrees is given.
