The nonlinear evolution of finite-amplitude perturbations that have arisen in flat, gaseous gravitating systems of finite thickness, such as the gaseous components of spiral galaxies, flat protogalaxies and highly flattened protoplanetary clouds, is discussed. Conditions are derived in terms of the gas adiabatic index for the strong growth of Jeans-type perturbations, taking into account the effects of nonlinear terms. The critical adiabatic index below which the perturbations can grow is found to be approximately 1.404, nearly equal to the adiabatic index of a diatomic gas.
