We extend previous calculations of mean field dynamos, solving simultaneously the induction and Navier-Stokes equations in three dimensions. The stability of these hydromagnetic dynamos, in which the nonlinearity in the MHD equation comes ultimately from the Lorentz force of the large scale field, is investigated and results compared with previous nonlinear kinematic dynamo models. For small Taylor numbers we do not find any stable solutions, but rather configurations in which global measures of parity and degree of axisymmetry continue to change. For larger Taylor numbers we find that, unlike models in which the nonlinearity is an alpha-quenching, nonaxisymmetric magnetic fields are stable.
