In preparation for the formulation phase of the Next Generation Space Telescope, the Ad Hoc Science Working Group (ASWG) has defined a 2.5 year program for the NGST, one that accomplishes the core science objectives for the observatory. This program, the Design Reference Mission (DRM), will be used as a key metric in measuring the performance of alternative telescope designs. The DRM will also inform the development of the NGST science and operations concepts at the STScI. We present an overview of the DRM, including statistics of science instrument usage, other recommendations by the ASWG, and a description of the ``uniqueness'' space for NGST visible, near-infrared, and mid-infrared capabilities.
