As part of its contribution to the Next Generation Space Telescope, the European Space Agency will provide the Near Infrared Spectrometer for the observatory. This instrument is presently undergoing definition studies in Europe and is forseen to provide a highly efficient 1-5 micron multi-object spectroscopic capability to NGST. The primary science objectives and requirements of this instrument will be outlined with emphasis on how these goals are reflected in the choice of preferred options for the spectrograph.
