The world view we have, at any given stage in our astronomical quest, strongly depends on the type of partial information we have been able to gain. Current cosmological theories are the children of instrumental advances. The author tries to document these assertions, and goes on to define directions which future instrumental developments can take. He compares these to the plans being made for future observatories.
