Bessel functions are employed to investigate the Newtonian attraction between two overlapping homogeneous round ellipsoidal segments. The limiting case in which the vertical axes of the two ellipsoids coincide is considered; the case in which the two ellipsoids are coaxial and completely separated, a situation which models double stars, also receives attention. The case in which the two ellipsoidal segments reduce to spherical segments of the same radius and density corresponds to the problem studied by Bouwkamp.
