A new x-ray transient, XTE J1739-302, was discovered near the Galactic Center in data from the Proportional Counter Array (PCA) on the Rossi X-ray Timing Explorer (IAUC 6748, 6757). The transient was observed on 12 August 1997, and not on either 3 August or 14 August or at any other time before or since; its duration was therefore between 3 hours and 11 days. The flux of approximately 80 mCrab implies a 2-100 keV x-ray luminosity of 5× 10^37 ergs/s. The spectrum is consistent with optically thin thermal bremsstrahlung at 20 keV. The power spectrum shows significant low-frequency noise. We will compare the spectral and timing characteristics of this source with black-hole transients and neutron star/Be binary outbursts to try to deduce its nature and predict the likelihood of recurrence.
