Venusian surface and atmosphere features as ascertained with the aid of the Venera 9 and 10 landers and the Mariner fly-bys are discussed. The inert CO2 atmosphere, the concentrated H2SO4 clouds, the greenhouse effect (high temperatures evaporating all water to increase IR absorption and thereby raise temperatures), absence of a magnetic field (with the solar wind impinging directly on the planet upper atmosphere), and weathering and age of surface formations are discussed. The higher falloff of density with height of the Venusian atmosphere (compared to earth's), features of the Venusian ionosphere, thermosphere, and corona, the higher nightside temperature, and illumination under the apparent cloud layer are discussed.
