At the Turku observatory an automatic photographic astrolabe has been constructed. A short description of the instrument is given and the calculation of the transit time is explained. The accuracy of the instrument is good. In the first observations the mean error of one observation has been plus or minus 0.185 arc sec an average. At the latitude of the observatory the usable declination range of the astrolabe is +31.7 to 86.6 deg. A proposal is made to eliminate the influence of refraction by filling the inside of the astrolabe with helium
