Moderately deep J and H images taken with an Hg:Cd:Te array are employed to determine the radial color profile of the cluster NGC 4147 with attention given to its observed central red cusp. The present near-IR data confirm the amplitude of the (J-H) color profile evinced in optical observations, but the results of a color-mapping technique contradict the strong radial color variation predicted in the interpretation. Because the color gradient is not detected when stochastic effects are suppressed, it is concluded that the central red cusp is related to a grouping of red giants near the cluster center.
